At Karma, we have always believed that a company is much more than a logo or a product. It is a collection of people, experiences, and stories (also, coffee).
It’s always much easier to relate to something if you are able to establish a deeper connection. A connection on a more, human level. So, we decided to introduce a more human element. No really, actual humans! We want to slowly introduce you to the driving force behind Karma, our team. Let’s get to know each other a little better shall we?
Say hello to Amanda Bensol, our Head of Business Development. She builds our brand, while also being the cornerstone of our operation. I sat down with Amanda and asked her some tough, journalistic questions.
Where are you originally from?
I’m originally from the suburbs of New York City (yes, Long Island), and have spent the better part of my life living in Manhattan.
What is your role here at Karma?
Hmm..well, what day of the week is it? At Karma, I juggle a majority of the “non-technical” tasks. First, I focus on Business Development, by seeking out strategic partnerships that will help bring in new users and enhance our brand. Along with Biz Dev, I oversee our Marketing efforts. I am constantly testing ways to acquire customers through different channels and mediums. Finally, and probably most important, I keep the lights on! I oversee the team, finances and run day-to-day operations.
What inspired you to begin working on Karma?
The idea: As a TechStars associate, I got to work with many different companies day in and day out. Karma was trying to solve a problem that seemed like a tremendous challenge. This intrigued me. Not only was this problem difficult, but it resonated with me personally. Like anyone else, I am easily frustrated when I am not able to get online while outside of the house. I wanted to be a part of a team that could fix this.
The team: After working closely with the team for three months, helping think through strategy, product and vision, I knew these were people that would succeed and Karma was a company that I could help grow. Working on a small team, it is always important to really enjoy and connect with those around you.
What type of phone do you use?
I use an iPhone 5 - who doesn’t?
What do you like to do outside of Karma?
Outside of Karma I love fitness, travel and hanging out with friends. I’m dedicated to visiting all 50 states and the top 10 countries on my “list.” I’m getting there!
You walk into a coffee shop, what do you order?
Large iced coffee, never hot, with skim milk!
If you could live in any city in the world, what city would you live in?
Besides the best city in the world? Yes, I’m one of those fully biased, obsessive New Yorkers. I’d have to say Sydney, Australia. I lived in Sydney for six months a few years ago and fell in love with the ability to be at the beach one hour and in the middle of a bustling city the next. If given the chance, I’d jump on a plane tomorrow to go back. Fun fact: kangaroos and koala bears - vicious, not cute and cuddly - but still awesome.
Dog person or cat person?
Dog, all the way, with an extreme puppy bias.
Are you a morning person or a night person?
A little bit of both. I guess I’m a “mid-day” kind of person.
What was the most recent gift you bought yourself?
My Nike FuelBand. It is the perfect toy to merge my obsessions: tracking statistics and fitness.
Has anything lucky happened to you lately?
Winning $1700 after starting with only $25 at a blackjack table in Atlantic City! Now that’s luck.
Finally, who is someone that you look up to?
Hands down, my dad. Growing up, my dad built and exited two successful companies simultaneously, while making sure to never once miss a soccer game of mine. Now that’s a hero.
